Insights from The AWS Summit:
'Fall in love with the problem, not the solution' - How do we bridge the gap from hope and hype to impact?
By Jurie Schoeman, BSG Managing Partner
The gap between hype / hope and fear / scepticism is a scenario as old as time - well before the original Industrial Revolution. Even then, you had people seen as crazy mavericks on one side, luddites on the other. However, with the rapid pace and immense scale of changes brought by Generation AI, it's crucial to consider how we can turn hope into tangible impact and dispel the fear. This topic was at the forefront of AWS Summit Johannesburg last week (28th and 29th August) – a fantastic opportunity to learn and connect.
The summit included real-world case studies of positive change, insights from global and local executive leaders on how to do so, and many interesting one-on-one discussions. The clear and consistent theme: Digital transformation needs to be solved through people, and culture and needs to be addressed responsibly. I summarised ‘being responsible’ as solving for both ’revenue’ AND for ‘risk’ by addressing business problems in an intentional and sustainable way.
It was inspiring to hear from AWS executives and thought leaders (Chris Erasmus, Phil Le-Brun, Brittany Lee Andersen, and Johan Hanekom), and from industry leaders who have already made progress and who want to help others to share from their experiences (Strini Mudaly, Flenk Mnisi, and Alicia Greenwood). I found Brittany's graphic of change adoption clear and practical (and roughly re-created for illustrative purposes by me):

What does this graphic tell us?
Technology always leads the way, and that pace of change has become exponential. It’s the enabler, the potential, the fuel for change. Individuals often adopt it without giving a lot of thought to risks, driven by a combination of inherent trust, naivety, and most importantly because the technology is making their lives easier. Businesses, however, adopt change more slowly, as they weigh the risk factors and the higher and broader standards and accountability to which they are held. The reason why culture is so important is because unless that changes, it's the individuals in the business who become the ‘Slowest Common Denominator’ (my term). Policy makers and regulators are the laggards – their bureaucratic processes and broader societal considerations remaining largely linear – so the gap between the rate of change in Gen AI Technology and the rate of change in Businesses and Policy is vast, and far more significant than ever before.
Key take-out (and reminder, because it’s always been this way) Digital Disruption is about Culture and People
Phil Le-Brun put it very well - if you change your technology, but don't change your business to help your people – focusing not just on ways of working but also on culture, your why, how, what, and who of working – then you're a Ferrari on a dirt road. If you change your business including focusing on your culture and people, but don't change your technology significantly enough or quickly enough, then you're a VW Beetle on an F1 race track.
People change connects the technology and business change, and done intentionally together, closes the gap between the hope and potential of that technology, vs the reality and actual performance of the business.
My purpose is impact – through connecting people, positivity, and action, and I can't think of a better time to do that, in line with the consistent points I took out of the AWS Summit:
- Get started! But do so with a real problem that's worth solving – otherwise, no- one will pay attention to what you do.
- Find the right partners to support you – the world is full of people who want to work together help - be open to learning from and with others.
- Be data-driven – otherwise you might find out too late that you're on the wrong track and take too long to pivot.
- Bring your people along with you – focus on your culture, and the very personal people change.
- Make compliance your friend – they’re a key part of the solution.
- Start small, iterate, and grow.
I'll keep sharing thoughts around this in the coming weeks, building on the practical wisdom and insights shared by those who are already adopting the change – please connect and share your own experiences and thoughts on creating lasting impact – we are Generation AI!
