On Friday, 11 September, 60 BSGers came together to brainstorm solutions to challenges faced by their partners at LEAP Science and Maths Schools. BSG’s partnership with LEAP came about in support of its commitment to being the difference through supporting education in South Africa. BSG has committed, as one of its goals for the next 10 years, to making a significant and sustainable difference in communities through education.

BSG is passionate about being a proactive force for positive change and in support of this, a team of BSGers visited the LEAP Schools to determine the challenges they face, or would be likely to face over the next year, and how BSG could partner with them to overcome these challenges.

In order to facilitate meaningful discussions, a BSG Café based on the World Café concept was hosted at BSG’s Johannesburg offices. Special guest speaker John Gilmour, Founder and CEO of LEAP Science and Maths schools kicked off with some inspiration and context setting. John was accompanied by Zanele, one of the LEAP students, and Zintle Mpayipheli a former LEAP student who is now a teacher at LEAP. They told the story of LEAP and the impact LEAP has had on their lives. They then assisted in facilitating the sessions to provide a deeper, more meaningful understanding of the journey of building a partnership.

Five groups were created and five key areas of improvement identified. Facilitators rotated every seven minutes to build on ideas from previous groups. Issues identified included addressing the challenges LEAP 3 (Linbro Park) is facing moving to new premises, mentoring, how corporates can support the schools’ Saturday classes and job shadowing opportunities and a LEAP do-it day. At the end of the session, BSGers made their personal commitment to making a difference through commitment cards that were signed and handed to the facilitators. To close off on a high note, BSG presented a cheque for R110 000 from all our fundraising initiatives completed during the year in support of LEAP, which was very appreciatively received by the John and his team.

Over and above BSG’s commitment to LEAP Schools, it is committed to ensuring education excellence at all levels.
